An 85-year-old father now cares for his son, who once cared for him, after the son was beaten and left for dead on an Independence street after a robbery.
Danny Cheng says his 51-year-old son, Jordan, is doing much better after he was attacked with a baseball bat while delivering Chinese food from the Mandarin House where he worked in Independence.
But Jordan Cheng had no idea that the delivery address was a vacant house, and three suspects were waiting to beat and rob him.
However, his attackers didn't take his wallet. They left him lying and bleeding in the roadway on South Hall Street.
"I don't know why they robbed and beat him. They almost killed my son," Cheng said as be began to cry.
Now the man who worked to care for his elderly father is now in ICU, unable to speak and can barely move.
Jordan Cheng suffered multiple fractures to his face and head, but has undergone surgery and is doing better, his father says.
"My son (was) working (to) support me," Cheng said, who is now struggling with no income and no other family in the United States.
The thought of what the future holds for the two is troubling, Cheng said.
Cheng left Taiwan years ago to start his own restaurant. He and his son are now United States citizens.
Two men and a woman have been charged in connection with the crime. James M. Hollis, 20, of Independence; Luis A. Reyes, 17, of Kansas City; and Brandy N. Locke, 29, of Independence, who is Hollis' girlfriend, are charged with one count of first-degree assault and armed criminal action.
The three made their first court appearance on Jan. 16 and they denied the allegations.
In the meantime, Cheng had to make a very difficult call to his wife, Jordan's mother, in Taiwan. But he says he's not willing to quit just yet.
"Now I got take care of my son. I'm 85 years old. Most people my age cannot walk, but I am still strong. I can take care of my son," Cheng said.
There was another delivery man attacked while delivering food just last week in Kansas City.
And Cheng said a pizza delivery man went to the address on South Hall Street first, where Cheng was beaten, but thought it was suspicious and drove away.
It is a crime that police are dealing with and one that makes delivery drivers everywhere cautious.
A fund has been set up to help the Cheng's.
