PHOENIX (CBS5/AP) -

A Mexican national lied to Texas authorities when he confessed to shooting U.S. Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry more than two years ago, according to the FBI.

An FBI spokesman said agents from San Antonio, TX, interviewed Gustavo Cruz-Lozano in southern Texas and that he admitted that he lied about shooting Terry in December 2010.

"During the course of the interview, Cruz-Lozano admitted to the agents that he lied about his involvement in the death of U.S. Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry in order to garner attention," according to the spokesman.

The Terry family had no comment.

Various news agencies reported that Gustavo Cruz-Lozano on Wednesday admitted to pulling the trigger and killing Terry. Cruz-Lozano turned himself in Wednesday and was arrested on charges of making death threats against Hidalgo County, TX, Sheriff Lupe Trevino, according to a report by Univision and two other U.S. broadcast networks.

Univision, a Spanish-language television network, reported that before he surrendered, Cruz-Lozano admitted in an exclusive interview with Primer Impacto that he pulled the trigger and killed Terry during a firefight between suspected illegal immigrants, drug smugglers and Border Patrol agents Dec. 14, 2010, near the U.S.-Mexico border in Arizona.

Primer Impacto is a daily news magazine show on Univision News.

Two AK-47s involved in the botched federal gun-walking case known as Fast and Furious were found at the scene near Naco in southern Arizona.

Five suspects have been indicted and one has pled guilty to first-degree murder in Terry's death. Another has been captured in Mexico and is currently awaiting extradition, according to the FBI.

"We had a drug shipment and when they took us by surprise, people started surrounding them, and that's when we ambushed them," Curz-Lozano told Primer Impacto correspondent Natalia Cruz. "When they started surrounding them and they had no time to react, I was the one, I was the one that killed him."
