A rare snowstorm for the Jackson area

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Central Mississippi got one of its rare snowstorms Thursday morning. It made for some pretty pictures but didn't last long.

The snow was really heavy at times and accumulated as much as four inches according to the National Weather Service. Most of the roadways stayed clear, despite some icing on bridges in the area.

The snow was quickly swept away but not before some snowball fights near Galloway Church downtown, and Belhaven University, where they really got into it.

Nora Johnson was out with her Jack Russell Terrier, who was seeing snow for the first time.

"Just glad, as long as it comes and goes," said Johnson laughing. "Not much on cold weather."

Olivia Cadoe, also in Belhaven, had to clear the snow off of her car before she could drive.

"It's very unusual in Mississippi. It's pretty wild," said Cadoe. "Woke up this morning and couldn't believe it."

The snow was pretty at city hall downtown and other places in Jackson.

"We had a period of heavy snow for several hours this morning, accumulated pretty rapidly," said National Weather Service Meteorologist Steve Wilkinson. "We had some, at least approaching four inch amounts. In the metro area, whereas a good bit of the area got about two inches. Then it stopped and we got nothing."

Mississippi's magnificent capitol building is always beautiful framed in snow. But it was all melting before nine a.m. and the skies were becoming blue from the west.
