A freight train struck a minivan at a Tempe crossing, injuring the van's driver and shutting down traffic on a major city street Thursday morning.
Tempe police said the van was struck about 7:30 a.m. near the intersection of University Drive and Farmer Avenue. Police closed off University to all east and westbound traffic at Farmer Avenue.
Police said the driver of the minivan drove around the crossing gates before being struck. They said she was taken to a nearby hospital and was expected to survive.
No other information was immediately available.
