Some tractor trailer drivers are upset and told Eyewitness News that a newly introduced chemical being used to de-ice Connecticut roads is damaging their vehicles.
The Department of Motor Vehicles are currently using a new salt mix of Magnesium Chloride.
State officials told Eyewitness News magnesium chloride does the best job of melting.
"It's good because it melts all of the ice," said Mike Lennon of Cannan. "I don't crash into a tree or something."
Salt and sand are rendered useless when temperatures dip into the teens. But critics said the damage to their cars just isn't worth it.
"There's a price to be paid," said President of Motor Transport Connecticut Mike Riley. "The state of Connecticut has made a decision that has laid a burden on my members."
Riley went onto say that he wants the Magnesium Chloride off the roads completely. He told Eyewitness News that he wants a public hearing on the chemical mixture.
"I've talked with mechanics who say in 20 years, they've never seen the rate of corrosion that's going on now," he said.
And Connecticut drivers agree.
"It actually rots the metal," said Shaquel Farrel of Hartford. "Makes every component on the vehicle to rot out."
The DOT said Connecticut was the last state in the northeast to adopt the chemical treatment that many municipalities in state are already using. Officials said they waited to see how it fared in other states.
"(Magnesium Chloride is) better for safety, better for the environment, and no additional costs to the salt priority," the DOT said in a statement to Eyewitness News. "It's a win, win, win."
DOT said motorists should take their vehicles to the carwash to fend off the effects of the chemical mixture.
