PHOENIX (CBS5) -
A home burglary suspect is dead from gunshot wounds he suffered after he pointed what appeared to be a handgun at Phoenix police officers Wednesday afternoon.
Cody Gene Criner, 27, was shot after he ran from a house in the 4100 block of East Capistrano Avenue about 2:30 p.m., according to Sgt. Tommy Thompson of the Phoenix Police Department.
Police chased after Criner, who police said pulled handgun from his waistband and pointed it at the pursuing officers. Two officers fired and struck Criner.
While on the ground, Criner pointed the handgun at a third officer, who also fired and struck Criner.
The gun used by Criner was later identified as a pellet gun, Thompson said.
Criner was taken to a nearby hospital where he died, Thompson said.
Investigators said Criner had driven to the area in a Ford pickup truck. A witness said Criner parked the truck, got out and did something to the license plate before jumping over a fence into the backyard of the home and breaking in.
Officers said they heard noises in the house and had established a perimeter when Criner bolted from the house.
Investigators said they recovered a ski cap believed to have been dropped by Criner as he ran from officers.
Police did not say whether anyone was in the home during the time of the break-in.
The officers involved in the shooting were:
A 38-year-old man with 10 years experience with the Phoenix Police Department
A 48-year-old man who has worked with Phoenix police for 11 years
A 47-year-old man who has 21 years of service with the Phoenix Police Department.
