New Haven police have found a missing 1-year-old girl who investigators said was taken from her home by her father Wednesday.
Police issued the Amber Alert after Madison Wilson was taken by Robert Williamson, who is her biological father. Madison was taken from her residence on Valley Street.
"The dad took the child from the babysitter," said New Haven Police Assistant Chief Archie Generosa. "We were very concerned and obviously an Amber Alert was put out."
Family members told Eyewitness News that Williamson is involved in a custody battle.
"He was supposed to be in court this morning, but instead he came and took the baby," said family member Rodney Henderson.
However, this incident was "not a custodial interference issue, but a kidnapping," police said.
According to police, Williamson called Madison's mother and threatened to kill himself and the child. Williamson was considered armed and dangerous and in possession of a handgun, police said.
State police confirmed that Williamson was headed to Hamden in a teal/blue Dodge Intrepid with Connecticut license plate 431 YTD.
The Amber Alert was canceled around 2 p.m. after police arrested Williamson at a liquor store on Orange Street in New Haven.
"The biological father is under arrest and charged with a number of charges," Generosa said.
The child was taken home by her mother, police said.
"She was frightened and upset," said mother Charlene Wilson. "Everybody else in family was disturbed."
Police said Williamson was originally going to bring the New Haven office of the Department of Children and Families.
According to court documents, Williamson has pleaded guilty to charges of risk of injury to a minor and second-degree breach of peace. He served prison time for second-degree burglary and criminal possession of a firearm.
Williamson is expected to be arraigned in New Haven Superior Court on Thursday morning on the recent abduction charges.
Anyone with any information about the incident is asked to call police at 203-946-6316 or the New Haven Police "Tips Line" at 203-946-2875.
