A police officer said she found a "disgusting mess" in a Kelso home and "days, perhaps weeks, worth of feces" in the bathtub, leading her to call in Child Protective Services to take custody of two children Saturday.
Kelso police were called to the home on Cedar Street by Danny Wannamaker, who lives at a separate address. He told officers his children, one boy and one girl, were living in filthy conditions at the home and that their mother was intoxicated.
When officers arrived, they contacted the mother, whom they described as "obviously intoxicated." She also had a large bruise on her left eyebrow, and said it came from being assaulted by Wannamaker earlier that day, according to the Kelso police report.
The two had been fighting over $40 when Wannamaker punched the woman in the face, she told police. Wannamaker was eventually arrested on a charge of fourth-degree assault.
The police officer then searched the home, and found an undressed child running through the house. A second child was asleep on a recliner and did not appear to have a bed, the police report said.
As the officer was about to enter the bathroom, the mother told her she didn't want to go in there, the police report said.
"I sincerely wish I could have considered her warning and not opened the bathroom door," the officer wrote in the police report.
"In the hallway, there was feces tracked everywhere to include the kitchen," she wrote. "I opened the bathroom door and was so sickened by what I saw. There was days, perhaps weeks, worth of feces in the bathtub."
The toilet was clogged and filled with feces, the report said. The officer said she saw one of the children wander the house in bare feet and walk from her bedroom through feces.
CPS took custody of the children around 8:30 a.m.
The mother told police she had no clean clothes for the children, and couldn't find any socks or shoes for them to wear in the mess of the house, the police report said.
Kelso police forwarded their report to Child Protective Services for review.
At this time, it's not clear whether the mom will face criminal charges. The Cowlitz County Jail's booking website did not list her in custody.
