Cold streak to last through Wednesday

PHOENIX (CBS5/AP) -

Warmer temperatures are on the way to the Valley of the Sun, but residents will have to deal with a lingering cold snap for at least another day.

The string of sub-freezing overnight lows is expected to extend into Wednesday morning before the streak that began Friday morning ends.

After a very cold Tuesday morning, highs will only top out around 50 degrees.  Then, after a cold Wednesday morning, afternoon highs will flirt with 60 degrees.  For the end of the week and the weekend, many areas will top out near 70 degrees.

No precipitation is forecast for the next week.

The cold spell hit the Navajo Nation hard Tuesday morning as the Window Rock School District canceled all classes Tuesday because of freezing temperatures.

The National Weather Service said the cold spell will also continue across northern Arizona until mid-week. Temperatures in Window Rock are expected to be well below freezing Tuesday with a high of 21 degrees and a low of minus-5 degrees.

The school district posted the cancellation notice on its website Monday when overnight temperatures were expected to dip down to minus-13 degrees. The district said heating the schools has been a problem.

All sporting events were expected to continue as scheduled.
