A lockdown has been lifted at the David Wooster Middle School in Stratford after police arrested four people who had pellet guns on school property.
Wooster Middle School Principal Jack Lynch told Eyewitness News that he immediately went on the loudspeaker after four men were spotted walking in the woods behind the school with two pellet rifles Tuesday afternoon.
"I go on the public address system and I say 'lockdown, lockdown, lockdown.' All of the children and all of the teachers know what that means," Lynch said. "They stay in the classroom, in a segment of the classroom that's away from the small window that's there, and lock the door."
The four men were arrested and told police that they did not plan to go inside the school.
However, the town of Stratford prohibits the possession of any air rifle including BB guns and pellet guns, which the teenagers were in possession of, according to police.
"They appear right now - initially did not have any intent to do any harm here," said Stratford Police Lt. Frank Eannotti. "They were just going to play around in the woods, they were teenagers, but it's still under investigation at this time."
No shots were fired, police said.
Chukwuemeke Onyerikwu, 19, of Stratford; Oladipupo Sule, 19, of Bridgeport; Joel Albornoz, 20, of Stratford; and Ghalib Sanni, 20, of Bridgeport were charged with carrying a dangerous weapon, breach of peace, reckless endangerment, dangerous activity, possession of an air gun and weapon possession in a recreational area.
All four men are being held on $5,000 bond and are scheduled to appear in Bridgeport Superior Court on Jan. 18.
The pellet rifles that Onyerikwu and Sule were carrying are designed for hunting small game, according to police. Albornoz and Sanni had air soft handguns, which are used to fire plastic pellets.
Police said it took several commands before the suspects dropped their weapons.
The incident occurred on the same day that a lockdown drill was planned.
Officials are allowing parents to take the children out of school following the incident.
"I didn't know what happened and when I came here and I was told what happened, it was scary," said Debby Crespo, who is a mother of one of the students. "You think of those parents in Newtown losing a child and then I'm thinking of what could have happened, I mean it's scary."
However, students told Eyewitness News that they were not worried.
"I was with teachers and I knew they were going to protect us at all costs," said eighth-grade student Gabriel Santana, who was inside the kitchen in the cafeteria.
Lenny Spina told Eyewitness News that his wife is a teacher at Wooster Middle School and his son attends the eighth grade there.
"I said, 'here we go again,'" he said. "It's like another city, another town, more aggravation. I don't understand anymore."
No one was injured during the incident, police said.
