Yearly maintenance is under way on canals in the Valley

PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Yearly maintenance is under way on canals in the Valley.

Portions of the Arizona Grand and Crosscut Canals on the north side of the Salt River will be drained.

Because of the work, many of SRP's north side irrigation customers will not receive water from the canals.

Residents in Scottsdale, Paradise Valley, Phoenix, Glendale, Peoria and north Tempe will be affected by the work.

Justin Schonhoff with SRP told CBS 5 News that once crews clean out mud and move fish they will work on cement repairs. Once those repairs are finished, they will gradually let water back into the canal system.

A special event will be held along the Scottsdale waterfront on Jan. 12 for folks to watch crews round up and relocate the fish.

All of the work is expected to last until Feb. 3.
