For the past several weeks, a local sculptor has been creating a work of art on the lawn of the Ivoryton Theatre from a tree that was damaged during a recent storm.
"I normally don't get to do a design that is this complex and has this much imagery going on," said Kris Connors of Custom Wood Cravings & More. "So I'm loving this, as an artist this is a blast for me."
The tree came down during Hurricane Irene and barely missed the playhouse, which left a large stump.
"I knew that I could not just take that stump down," said Jacqueline Hubbard of Ivoryton Playhouse. "We had to do something to commemorate the building, the tree, the lives of this town."
Officials at the playhouse commissioned Connors to integrate a variety of themes into the work, which features a young boy reading a book on one side.
"He's symbolic of all the actors and actresses, who have practiced their lines under this actual tree," Connors said.
Connors said he has been at it for about three weeks and said folks are always stopping to comment.
"I've made a lot of friends here," he told Eyewitness News.
Polly Johnson of Ivoryton Playhouse said the stump "was the ugliest thing in the world" and has been impressed with the current creation.
"The playhouse is an important part of Ivoryton and we are just so pleased that this has added so much more to it," Johnson said.
Connors told Eyewitness News he figures it will take him a couple more days to wrap the project.
