Connecticut State Police have canceled an Amber Alert for a missing 9-year-old from Stonington and arrested the man who took her.
Authorities told eyewitness news that Daisha Rhodes was found safe after she was reported missing.
According to police in Rhode Island, Daisha and the suspect, Daniel Candales, 42, were located in Westerly.
Candales lead police on a chase through Westerly and Hopkinton before officers were able to catch him at the Super Stop and Shop in Richmond, RI. Police used cell phone tracking after the Amber Alert was activated to locate Candales.
"He has a criminal history where you could write a hardcover book," said Candales's ex-wife, Mandy Meyers.
According to police, Candales met Meyers at the Stonington Police Station. Candales would pick up and drop off their daughter as part of their custody agreement.
Police said Candales was with his current girlfriend and her child, a 9-year-old girl. But as soon as they pulled into the police station, Meyers knew something was wrong.
"Mr. Candales tossed my daughter to my fiance," Meyers said. "His girlfriend jumped out of the truck, running towards the police station, hysterically crying."
As Candales dropped off his 5-year-old with Meyers, Daisha was still in the car.
"He got back in his truck and proceeded to drive away with an officer telling him to stop," Meyers said.
An alert was sent out in Connecticut and Rhode Island and officers spotted the truck, which is when the chase started. Police said Candales traveled into Rhode Island to try to lose police.
Police said it was just a little more than an hour after the Amber Alert was first issued that they found Candales in the parking lot of a Super Stop and Shop, where he surrendered peacefully.
Candales is a convicted sex offender, but Stonington police wouldn't elaborate on those charges. Meyers is hoping after this incident, Candales will be cut off from all children.
"I never hugged my daughter tighter in my life, because she could've been in that vehicle too," she said.
Daisha was not seriously injured during the incident, police said.
Meyers said Canales's history of violence should've prevented him from interacting with his kids altogether.
"He's been to jail multiple times, he's been on probation for I don't know how many years," she said.
However, Meyers said Candales was still able to see his 5-year-old daughter twice a week.
"She's witnessed other accounts of slapping," she said. "Him slapping the girl, just the things coming out of a child's mouth that she should not know."
The whole incident made Meyers worry about her children.
"It could have been my child and that has since hit me," she said.
Candales is being held as a fugitive from justice by Richmond police and remains in prison Tuesday night.
He is being charged with two counts of risk of injury to a minor, and could be facing several additional charges, police said. Candales is expected to face a judge in Connecticut Wednesday.
