GILBERT, AZ (CBS5) -
Gilbert police said they arrested a man in connection with the fatal shooting of a motorist Sunday afternoon.
Ysidro Steven Cota III, 46, of Mesa, was booked into jail on charges of second-degree homicide, aggravated assault and prohibited possessor of a firearm after Michael Kafta, 48, of Mesa was shot to death near Elliot and Gilbert roads about 3 p.m.
Police said Cota was a former employee of Kafta, but that police had no motive for the shooting.
Cota was riding a motorcycle and was talking with Kafta as they were stopped at the intersection of Bruce and Burke in Gilbert. Cota allegedly fired into the car, striking Kafta in the head. Kafta's car accelerated and struck a parked car at an apartment complex, causing both cars to roll, police said.
Emergency workers had to extricate Kafta and a passenger, Chantal Cassidy, 29, of Gilbert.
Kafta was pronounced dead and Cassidy was taken to a hospital with minor injuries not tied to the shooting, police said.
Police arrested Cota about 8:30 p.m. Sunday, and that they were still looking for a woman believed to have been a passenger on Cota's motorcycle.
Cota admitted to starting a verbal fight with Kafta. Cota told police that Kafta had allegedly made threats in the past to harm Cota and Cota believed Kafta had a weapon.
Cota said he left the scene after the shooting and dismantled the weapon before throwing it into an area near Dobson and Loop 202.
