Meriden's water that has a history of tasting bad and smelling worse could see major improvements soon.
The Broad Brookwater Facility is now up for a $19.5 million upgrade and a vote by the city's finance committee on the project that is expected to occur Tuesday night.
The aging treatment tanks at the Broad Brookwater Facility would be replaced with new ones that use air to push algae to the surface, so it can just be scraped off. The new system would also handle high levels of metal in the water.
"The last time this plant was upgraded was in (19)75 or (19)76, over 30 something years," said Meriden Public Works Director David Lohman. "It's overdue and we need to address it."
Some residents told Eyewitness News that the water "doesn't taste good."
"We've been on bottled water for maybe 10 years," said Mike Falis of Meriden.
The Broad Brookwater Facility treats water for about half the city and parts of neighboring towns.
"It would be so much easier to turn the tap on and you have clear water and hopefully in the near future it will come to that," Falis said.
If the finance committee approves the bonding, then the city council will vote Monday at 7 p.m. inside council chambers at City Hall.
If everything is approved, the new system would be up and running by spring of 2015.
