The Middletown Police Department is continuing to investigate a deadly hit-and-run over the weekend that killed a 15-year-old girl.
Police said Cailyn Bassett, of Clinton, was hit by a vehicle as she was walking along Saybrook Road in Middletown at about 5:45 p.m. Friday.
Cailyn, a 10th-grade student at the Morgan School, was pronounced dead a short time later.
Police confirmed that officers have located a vehicle that may have been involved in the crash. They also stated that they have talked to several "persons of interest" in the case.
Visiting hours for Cailyn will be held at the Church of The Open Door on East Main Street in Clinton on Dec. 15 from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. with a memorial service at 11 a.m.
According to her grandmother, Cailyn had gone to the vocational agricultural program in Middletown, loved to write and was active in her church. She had permission from her mother to take the bus up to Middletown to visit some friends from the program on Friday night when she was hit by a car.
Friends of Cailyn said she was an "awesome person" and they were happy to know her.
"I hope she's resting up there," George Cassell, a freshman at Morgan School, told Eyewitness News previously. "I hope she rests in peace."
A pole near the intersection where Cailyn was hit is now standing as a growing makeshift memorial to the teen.
Counselors were brought to Morgan School to talk to both teachers and students Monday.
Middletown police continue to search for the driver who fled the scene after the accident. No arrests have been made as of Tuesday night. However, sources said a tow truck was involved in the crash.
"This is a process that's going to take a little bit of time, and we want to make sure we have everything correct and accurate and we don't falsely accuse anyone, or anything," said Middletown police Lt. Heather Desmond. "And make sure we have the right person responsible."
The department has obtained surveillance video of the accident.
"I'm saying lots of prayers for them, hopefully they can get through this, especially at a terrible time right before Christmas," said Reflections Car Wash owner Cindy Moskey.
Moskey said she has 16 cameras keeping track of what happens inside the business and around it. The car wash owner said she is hoping the footage she provided police with will help them crack the case.
"It's a terrible tragedy, and whether it was an accident or not, someone hit her," Moskey said. "So, hopefully they can use that information and bring the person in."
Anyone with information about the hit-and-run is asked to call Middletown police at 860-344-3264.
