Wreaths Across America makes stops in Connecticut

ENFIELD, CT (WFSB) -

The Wreaths Across America convoy truck is making stops throughout the state before heading to Arlington National Cemetery and on Tuesday, delighted children of all ages in one Connecticut town.

The convoy truck is stopping in six locations while in Connecticut including Enfield, Portland, Higganum and Old Saybrook.

The truck, which was escorted by police and the Patriot Guard riders, was met by local veterans, children and their families at the Parkman Elementary School in Enfield Tuesday morning.

"Thank you for risking your life, so I can have a better life," said one Enfield resident. "You helped our nation. I salute you."

It was the second year in a row that the truck, which was filled with 5,000 wreaths, stopped at the school.

"When I grow up I hope to be like you," said one child.

The children also presented four Connecticut Gold Star families of serviceman killed in action with wreaths.

On Wednesday, the truck will be in Groton and New London.

Wreaths Across America is a non-profit organization that sends wreaths to Veterans' graves. The organization will cover all 330,000 graves at Arlington Cemetery this year.

A simultaneous ceremony will be held Saturday at noon in more than 800 locations in the United States and abroad.

The theme for the program is remember, honor and teach.
