Powerball winners pick up their prize

Some Connecticut residents didn't win the big Powerball draw, but the folks picking up checks at the Connecticut Lottery office Friday were plenty happy with the million dollar consolation prize.

The folks from Toyota of Stamford were one number short of being multi-millionaires, but their cut of the $1 million pick for second place had them all feeling mighty fine nonetheless.

"We're winners. Absolutely, we're winners," said John Lynn from Toyota of Stamford.

He said the employees play quite often, usually combining their efforts when it gets up high.

"Anytime anybody ask me I'm gonna throw $10 in," said Toyota employee Tom Purcell, who was playing Powerball for the first time.

In all, 23 employees of the dealership kicked in $10 apiece, which bought them 115 quick pick tickets. However, three employees did not chose to enter the game.

"They are a little unhappy," said Toyota employee Anthony Giovati.

Two people split the grand prize in the drawing last week of $587 million and one of three tickets in Connecticut had all but the final Powerball number right.

After taxes, each of the 23 employees from Toyota of Stamford got checks Friday for $43,000.

"I gonna have some fun. I will give some to charity," said Steve DeFelice. "It is always good to give back and hopefully, we'll be rewarded again."
