A doctor from West Hartford appeared in court Thursday after police said he sexually assaulted a woman in his home.
Police said he met the woman on a dating website and attacked her on their first date.
Abhishek Shah, 31, is now facing a number of charges for the attack including sexual assault, assault, unlawful restraint and disorderly conduct.
Police said they were called to the Farmington Avenue apartment for the assault that occurred during the date and arrested Shah.
They said he physically and sexually assaulted his victim and told police he is a medical resident practicing as a doctor of psychology at UConn Medical Center.
Police said Shah met his victim on a dating website, and in his profile he said he is a "down to Earth, laid-back person with a great sense of humor."
He also said he "loves to try new things and have fun."
According to court papers, Shah asked a woman over to watch a movie Wednesday night and she said he forced himself on her. The court papers refer to the victim as Jane Doe.
"Shah put his hands down Doe's skirt/shorts multiple times and kept trying to take off her clothes," court documents read.
After the alleged sexual assault, the victim said Shah slapped her and she left his apartment. She called her friends and then the police in the parking lot, court documents said. She said she had told her friends where she would be, since this was a first date.
Shah, who grew up in New York, is currently a second year resident at UConn Medical Center and doing rotations at Saint Francis and Hartford hospitals, as well as the Institute of Living. He has been suspended and is on administrative leave.
Shah has only been in Connecticut for a year and a half, according to police.
Police said this isn't the first time they've been called to Shah's apartment. Police said a woman met Shah through the same website accused him of sexual assault in august of 2011.
Police said shah wasn't charged in that case, because there wasn't enough evidence.
Shah was ordered by a judge to turn in his passport and cannot have any contact with the woman. His next court appearance is Jan. 10.
While leaving Shah, who is currently out on a $75,000 bond, his family and his attorney did not talk to Eyewitness News.
