MIDDLETOWN, CT (WFSB) -

A Bridgeport man was arrested Monday night after police said he led them on a high-speed chase, hit them and even dragged an officer with his car.

Undercover detectives from the Middletown Police Department set up a meeting with Charles Carr, 40, in the parking lot of Tradewinds Plaza at about 11 p.m.

When investigators tried to arrest Carr, he rolled up his windows and locked his doors, police said. Investigators said they saw Carr ingest plastic bags full of crack cocaine and then drink water.

Investigators broke the window of Carr's car to stop him from swallowing the drugs, police said. Carr started to drive away with officers inside his car, police said.

Police said investigators had to jump out of the way of Carr's vehicle and even dragged one of the officers out of the parking lot for several yards.

The officer was able to get free and only suffered minor injuries during the incident, police said.

After one attempt to pull Carr over, an undercover Middletown police vehicle and Connecticut State Police were able to pull over his car on Route 9.

When being arrested, police said Carr refused to get out of the car and punched, kicked and yelled at the officers.

Carr, who has a lengthy criminal history, was charged with two counts of reckless driving as well as disobeying an officer's signal, engaging police in pursuit, sale of certain illegal drugs, possession of narcotics, interfering with an officer simple assault, attempt to commit a crime, assault public safety officer/emergency services, first-degree reckless endangerment and destruction of property/evidence.

He is being held on $400,000 bond and is expected to appear in Middlesex Superior Court on Dec. 18.
