Gas leak in Naugatuck closes road in the area

NAUGATUCK, CT (WFSB) -

Drivers are being advised to avoid Hoadley Street between Rubber Avenue and Hoadley Terrace in Naugatuck after a gas leak Friday night.

It is unclear how long the road will be closed, but it is expected to be several hours for the leak to be repaired, police said.

Officials said a gas main cracked around 1 p.m. after they received reports of people smelling gas.

Crews did not say how many customers were being affected by the leak. However, no one was evacuated and the gas in the area has already been shut off.

Cracks are fairly common in Naugatuck because of the cold weather and old infrastructure.

The cause of the leak is under investigation at this time.
