Two community officers were able to stop a group of individuals from stealing a delivery truck filled with packages, including holiday presents, in Hartford on Thursday night.
A group of people stole a FedEx truck on Chadwick Avenue and fled the scene around 6 p.m., according to the Hartford Police Department.
Lakisha Young, 37, of Hartford, her brother Troy Young, 24, of Hartford, and Raymond Rodriguez, 28, of Manchester, were arrested by Park Street Community Service Officers Gamaliel Perez and Mike Verrengia.
"There were a lot of boxes that we could tell were Christmas presents," Perez said.
The officers caught the suspects near Lakisha Young's home on Orange Street.
"We noticed three individuals loading boxes in their hands and attempting to run from the vehicle," Verrengia said.
Police said the suspects could have easily gotten away with the crime, however they credited being embedded in the neighborhoods for years.
"When a crime happens in the community, myself and Officer Perez are able to respond," Verrengia said. "And we know where to go, kind of who to look for, and where to look for it. So, it's just a bonus."
All the items were recovered, and the truck went on with its deliveries.
The Hartford Police Department said this incident still serves as a warning to secure the numerous valuables you probably are carting around at this time of the year, especially if you are a delivery person.
Residents of Chadwick Avenue were upset about the theft.
"They take a FedEx truck, they should go to jail, that's what I say," said Oliver Jones of Hartford.
Jones said he was worried about what was inside the packages such as medicines, mail and early Christmas presents.
Anyone with any information about any incidents in the city is asked to call 860-757-4089 or the tip line at 860-722-TIPS (8477). All tips will be kept confidential.
