State health officials add new requirements to childhood vaccine list

WINDSOR, CT (WFSB) -

The Connecticut Public Health Department is adding more vaccines for children with one of them being for influenza.

The flu can be dangerous for many small children and that's is why the flu vaccine has been added to the list of vaccines, according to one local doctor.

"The flu is among those respiratory illnesses that can land many children in the hospital," said Dr. Vasanth Kainkaryam of Hartford Medical Group

Kainkaryam has already started treating children with the flu, but still encourages parents to get their children vaccinated.

Flu season goes from October to May and millions of people across the United States are expected to get it this year with children being more prone.

Connecticut Department of Public Health currently provides 11 vaccines free of charge to health care providers. Although many doctors charge a fee to administer them.

But, this week the Connecticut Department of Public Health announced it is adding three more vaccines to the list and they are pneumococcal conjugate, influenza and hepatitis A.

This means that all school-aged children will be required to have 14 vaccinations, however some can opt out for medical or religious reasons.

"They missed three days of school, but it wasn't too bad," said Eula Ruffin of Windsor.

Ruffin said both her children had the flu, but since they've been getting flu shots, it's kept them pretty healthy.

"I think all kids should be vaccinated, prepare them for this weather and all the germs going around," she said.

The list of the required vaccines is available at the following link.
