Men pretend to be MDC workers in West Hartford in 2 separate incidents

WEST HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) -

West Hartford residents are being asked to be on alert after men in two separate incidents posed as Metropolitan District Commission workers.

Officials want residents to not allow anyone in their homes without proper identification.

According to MDC officials, a man told a homeowner in West Hartford Tuesday that he worked for the "water company" and tried to enter the residence.

Later in the day, two men told another homeowner that they worked for the water company and wanted access to his house.

Police said the incidents occurred on Washington Circle and Edgemere Avenue in West Hartford.

MDC officials are not releasing the locations of either incident and it is unclear if the suspect got into the home or if anyone was injured.

In October, a man in his 20s claiming to be from the water company went into a home on Newington Road and told the homeowner he was there to check the water meter in the basement.

Money was missing from a hidden location after the man left the home.

A similar incident in Newington occurred earlier in the month, when two men told an elderly couple they were from MDC and needed to test their water, went through the home and even took their phone away so they couldn't call for help.

There is no word if any cases were connected at this time. It is unclear if anyone has been arrested in any of the cases.

MDC officials want to remind people to ask for worker identification before letting anyone into a home. And residents should only open their doors to workers only if they have scheduled an appointment, called for service or an emergency such as a water main break.

MDC stated its policy is "No Identification - No Entry."

Recently released photos of employees' uniforms give homeowners a better idea what workers are required to wear if they show up at someone's house. According to the MDC, all field employees wear clothing and drive vehicles clearly marked with the MDC logo.

MDC employees must provide homeowners with proper credentials before entering a residence.

If a homeowner does not feel comfortable allowing an employee into their home, they are urged to call the MDC 24 hours a day, seven days a week at 860-278-7850 ext 3600.
