Suspect arrested after leading police on chase in Hartford

HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) -
A New Britain man is in custody Tuesday night after a police pursuit that started in Hartford, traveled through East Hartford and ended near Bulkeley High School where the suspect was arrested and the school was placed into lockdown.
According to police, Jose Diaz, 33, was driving a white Nissan Maxima in the area of Columbus Boulevard and Arch Street when he engaged police into a pursuit and then headed to East Hartford.
Sources told Eyewitness News that enforcement agents attempted to pull the car over as part of some sort of ongoing narcotics investigation and that is when the suspect drove at a federal task force officer.
Corrections officer Marc Alderucci, who is a member of the Hartford federal task force, shot his gun towards the suspect's car. The bullet went through the windshield and missed the suspect, sources said.
Diaz fled the scene and was arrested in an apartment building at Bond Street and Wethersfield Avenue, which is near Bulkeley High School.
Police said Diaz was arrested as part of an investigation by the Hartford federal task force.
Police said it's unclear how many accidents the driver caused during that pursuit. However, there was one in the downtown area and potentially, two more in the path of the chase.
There were lock-ins at Burr Elementary School and Bulkeley High School, which were lifted as soon as Diaz was detained in connection with the situation, school officials said.
During the lock-in, students and staff were still free to move about the building and attend classes, but no one was allowed in or out of the buildings.
No one was injured during the pursuit.
Members of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Hartford state's attorney's office, Connecticut State Police and Hartford Police Department Major Crimes Unit are investigating the incident.
Anyone with any information about previous incidents in the city is asked to call 860-757-4089 or the tip line at 860-722-TIPS (8477). All tips will be kept confidential.
