Mayors want education forum

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX (AP) -

A group of Arizona mayors is calling for a statewide discussion about the future of education and funding reforms.

Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton, Mesa Mayor Scott Smith and others announced their effort Monday.

They're pushing for community action following the failure of a ballot initiative that would have made permanent a penny-on-the-dollar sales tax for funding education, construction and social services.

The mayors are specifically calling on elected officials, political party leaders and the business community to work with school boards, teachers and nonprofit groups to develop solutions.

Smith says ensuring a quality education for Arizona's children and building a well-educated workforce are "too important to be impacted by city boundaries."

The mayors are encouraging participation from both small and large cities.
