Veteran status can be added to Connecticut licenses starting in 2013

ROCKY HILL, CT (WFSB) -

Starting next year, Connecticut veterans can have their military status shown on their drivers or state-issued licenses.

According to the governor's office, the notification on the licenses will allow veterans to get services and benefits they need and are entitled to in convenient fashion.

"We owe so much to the brave members of our Armed Forces," said Gov. Dannel P. Malloy in a statement Friday. "This symbol on drivers licenses and ID cards is a small step we can take to make sure our veterans have a more convenient way to access the benefits and services they have earned."

Each license will have an American Flag to indicate veteran status, the statement said. There is no cost to add the symbol to a resident's license.

"Adding this symbol to state-issued IDs is great way to make sure that veterans always have the documentation they need when they attempt to access different services," said Lt. Gov. Nancy Wyman.

To receive the symbol on their license, veterans must submit the following items to the Department of Motor Vehicles or an AAA office:

  • State Department of Veterans Affairs - a completed application
  • Proof of honorable discharge

The process takes about 30 days to complete.

Applications are available at the following link.
