Water main leaking in Waterbury; Crews waiting on parts before beginning repairs

WATERBURY, CT (WFSB) -

The city of Waterbury has a lot of old pipes and this one on Thomaston Avenue is one of them. The problem is the pipe is leaking and the city doesn't have the parts to fix it.

But the pipe could burst - and that would leave thousands of homeowners and businesses without water.

Business owner Mario Fusco told Eyewitness News that some customers couldn't get to his coffee shop over the weekend because water from a leaky pipe froze and the road was dangerous and closed...now he's worried the pipe could break.

"They had a hard time," Fusco said. "We can't afford to lose another weekend, especially this time of year."

City officials told Eyewitness News the pipe is about 90 years old and a joint where it connects with other pipes has eroded.

Officials don't have the parts to fix it and had to order them.

However, the delivery of parts could take a few days and if the pipe can't hold out and does burst, it would cut off water to about 20 percent of the city.

Businesses in the west end of the city where the pipe is located have dealt with other leaks before.

"Last year, the break was over that way, it was the same thing," said business owner Steve Pesino. "They couldn't get the parts, it went on for a week."

City officials told Eyewitness News that it hopes to have the parts by Saturday. In the meantime, they are keeping a close eye on the pipe as well as the leak  and hoping things do not get worse.
