Waterbury Police Department puts more officers in Overlook neighborhood

WATERBURY, CT (WFSB) -
The Waterbury Police Department has increased its presence in the Overlook neighborhood after two robberies over the last three weeks.
On Oct. 26, residents told Eyewitness News that a couple was jumped while walking down the street. And just two days ago, a woman was mugged at gunpoint right on her front porch.
"I heard screaming and that was in the beginning of the block where I was going and I thought it was two people fighting," said Molly Brach of Waterbury. "I didn't even realize what was happening."
Police believe two robberies are connected and think the suspects in both crimes shared similar traits.
"We are investigating the strong possibility that the crimes are connected," the Waterbury Police Department said in a statement.
Police added that they are actively investigating the robberies and that has lead to the increased police presence in the area.
The mayor has also asked for added lighting in the area.
"We're going to step up our presence up there on the police side and also the community watch group," said Waterbury Mayor Neil O'Leary.
O'Leary said some people are against the additional lights.
Many residents told Eyewitness News that they are nervous in their own neighborhood.
"We're scared to walk outside of our houses," Brach said.
Police said several arrests were made shortly after an incident in March. However, that case is unrelated to these two incidents, police added.
Residents remember the incident.
"Last time when there was an incident about six months ago, there was a strong police presence for probably about two to three weeks and slowly it fizzled out," said one Waterbury resident, who did not want to be identified. "And now it's happening again."
