PD: Officer injured after drunk driver crashes into cruiser head-on

VERNON, CT (WFSB) -

Vernon police arrested a man they said was driving drunk when he crashed head-on into a police cruiser early Thursday morning.

At about 1:15 a.m., Vernon police Officer Richard Tedford was stopped at a traffic light facing north on Grove Street when a second car, operated by 45-year-old Roberto Reinoso, of Kent Road in Tolland, slammed his Volkswagon Passat into the police cruiser as he was trying to negotiate a curve from East Main Street onto Grove Street.

Tedford, who is a 10-year veteran of the force, was brought to a local hospital to be treated for his injuries. Reinoso, despite his airbags being deployed, refused medical treatment.

It is unclear where Reinoso was headed or where he was coming from.

After an investigation, Reinoso was arrested and charged with DUI, failing to drive right and operating a motor vehicle without a licence.

On Thursday, Reinoso, who has no previous criminal history, appeared in Rockville Superior Court.

"Due to his limited ties to the community and the nature of the charges and the court's concern for the community at large, bond is raised to $10,000," said judge Hunchu Kwak.

Reinoso was also ordered to stay away from driving and consuming or possessing any alcohol.

His boss at the Benny's Restaurant, where Reinoso is a cook, bailed him out. The man, who did not give his name, told Eyewitness News that Reinoso is a "responsible worker" who likely used bad judgment in this case.

Vernon police also said they're looking into other possibilities of enforcement action against Reinoso.
