New Haven to get first view at plans for Shoreline Greenway
By WFSB Staff
NEW HAVEN, CT (WFSB) -
The Shoreline Greenway is a 25-mile stretch of trails for bikers and walkers to connect New Haven and Madison and will be the topic of a public meeting in the Elm City Wednesday night.
"The idea is to create a link between Lighthouse Point Park and Hammonasset State Park," said Bob Levine, New Haven director of Parks, Recreation and Trees.
On Wednesday night, New Haven residents are expected to get the chance to look over the plans for the city's part of the project. City officials are looking to receive input from the public on the plans at the meeting.
The planning stage is still in its infancy, however organizers said they need to get community backing and raise the money.
Levine told Eyewitness News that the Shoreline Greenway is still a year and a half from being completed. While the trail is a work in progress, some sections have already been completed in Madison, Branford and East Haven.
However, some New Haven residents are already excited about the project.
"I know they have one in the Valley and in Hamden," said Margie Couture of New Haven. "I think it's a great idea."
The New Haven portion of the Shoreline Greenway would start at Lighthouse Point Park. And Couture walks the park a few days a week and hopes some day to walk all the way to Madison.
"I know the trails they've built so far have really worked out and I think it brings people together, more people coming out to walk, can have more of a distance if you want to go two to three miles," she said. "That would be a good idea."
The plan is for the make up of the trails to have common look to them.
"We're looking at soft surfaces, so it's good for joggers and runners, but hard enough so it's good for bikes, people pushing carriages, wheelchairs, a mix trying to accommodate all kinds of folks," Levine said.
The public meeting at the Nathan Hale School at 7 p.m.
