Police in Naugatuck said a portion of Route 63 has been closed because of a crash and will remain closed during the evening commute.
The crash was reported in the area of Hazel Avenue early Tuesday morning.
Police said a vehicle slammed into a utility pole around 6 a.m. and damage to it has forced officials to shut the road down until repairs can be made.
After the crash, police said, the driver of the vehicle fled the scene but police were able to locate him.
Tyron Hammond, 30, was arrested and charged with evading responsibility, operation of motor vehicle without a license and traveling too fast for conditions.
Naugatuck police said the road could be closed for several hours because of the unstable utility pole.
Drivers are being asked to avoid the area of Route 63 between Cross Street and Hazel Avenue and take alternate routes to avoid extended delays, according to police.
