A man is behind bars after a woman was forced to escape out a third-story window in fear of her life, and now, Hartford police are investigating to see if the suspect is connected to a murder earlier this year.
Police said the unidentified woman was badly beaten and was sexually assaulted. Now there is new information being learned about her accused attacker, identified as Kenneth Maestas, of Woodland Street.
Hartford police said Maestas had the woman in the abandoned Broad Street home, and brutally beat and raped her. Witnesses said she was found dangling from a third-floor window in an attempt to climb to another balcony to escape her attacker.
Detectives said the woman was strangled and Maestas was charged with first-degree sexual assault with a firearm, second-degree strangulation, first-degree unlawful restraint and second-degree threatening.
Maestas is being held in jail in lieu of $500,000 bond
After being rescued, the unidentified woman was brought to Hartford Hospital for treatment of severe head injuries.
"We're here hoping and praying this is the person who did it to my mom, so he can go to jail," said Noemi Torres, who is the daughter of Sonia Rivera.
In September, Rivera, 48 at the time of her death, was found partially clothed and severely beaten and later died from her injuries.
She was found in an alley off Washington Street in Hartford and was partially clothed. She was suffering from a severe head trauma after being beaten, police said.
After hearing the news, Torres and her family came to Hartford Police Department to see if the two crimes are connected. Her daughter believes Maestas could be the man who beat her mother.
"The first thing that went through my head is I believe this is the person and I hope it is, so we can have closure and my mom won't die in vain," Torres said.
No arrests have been made in the case and her daughters are hoping it is a match.
"It's painful. Like I said, just want this person caught so he don't do it to anyone else," said Carmen Rivera.
Hartford police are investigating if the two crimes are connected.
"We are definitely trying to identify the possibility if there are other victims out there and had contact with him in the past," said Hartford police Lt. Brian Foley. "Some who may have reported it or may not have reported it. We have a team of investigators looking."
Members of Mothers United Against Violence said they will be holding a rally at the Monday's crime scene on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
