FAIRFIELD, CT (WFSB) -

Fairfield County was hammered by Sandy and on Tuesday, the cleanup began.

Power was restored to area near the Fairfield Police Department around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday. However, 20,065 customers or 71 percent of the town remain without power as of 11 p.m.

The sound of water pumping out of basements is becoming a familiar sound for residents of Fairfield County.

"There's a lot of flood waters feet deep leading from the beaches," said one Greenwich resident.

Several streets were closed off to motorists and pedestrians while trees and power lines were toppled over. An emergency shelter was setup at Ludlowe High School on Unquowa Road.

Flooding was a problem for residents in Westport.

"I thought I lived in Connecticut, not Italy," said George Cary of Westport. "We walk down these streets all the time. And today it's a disaster area."

As of 11 p.m., 10,380 customers or 84 percent of the town was without power.

An emergency shelter has been setup at Long Lots Elementary School on Hyde Lane.

For information on shelter, residents can call 211.
