The effects of Sandy were felt as far away as central Connecticut, and on Tuesday, residents woke up to damage to their homes and backyards.
In Simsbury near Route 10 and Plank Hill Road, there is no power and the main road into town has been shut down. Connecticut Light and Power crews have been repairing an utility pole in the area after a transformer fire and it is unclear when the work will be completed.
"It looked like the sun landed," said Mark Brady of Simsbury. "And there was just sparks flying out of it and it was like a welding arc that was like 30 feet in diameter."
A 60-foot high tree snapped off near its base and took out a portion of John Holland's porch in Portland.
"And it really, it shook the entire house," he said. "We actually heard some of the snap and then within a second or two, we could hear the impact hit the building."
The tree sits near Holland's property line and he now wants to know if the tree was on his property or his neighbor's to figure out which insurance will cover the damage.
"We're trying to determine just whose it is," he said. "We'll find that out soon."
In Hartford, a tree smashed through a home on Broad View Terrace.
"Now it's my understanding the city is gonna make her tear it down," said John Appello of Hartford. "So that's the end of that, thank God."
Neighbors said they believed the owner let the home become blighted and won't miss it.
"The city of Hartford was not hit as hard as other cities and towns in Connecticut, but our preparation greatly mitigated the impact of Hurricane Sandy on our residents and will facilitate a quick and efficient recovery," said Mayor Pedro Segarra.
In Hartford, which housed many castaways during Sandy, schools and city buildings are expected to reopen Wednesday morning.
"Now we are in full recovery and response mode and we are doing everything possible to return to normalcy," Segarra said.
At the peak of the storm, 3,500 customers in Hartford were without power. By 11 p.m., 929 customers, or 1 percent, were still without power.
In Avon, downed wires on Route 44 were repaired and Avon Mountain has since reopened.
