PHOENIX (CBS5) -
A suspected gang member from California was shot and killed by a Phoenix police officer after a struggle for the officer's gun Sunday night.
The suspect was believed to have been involved in a domestic fight with a man and woman near 71st Avenue and Thomas Road and was seen by the officer running across Thomas Road about 8 p.m., according to Officer James Holmes of the Phoenix Police Department.
The officer pulled over and almost immediately got into a fight with the suspect, Holmes said. The suspect tried to grab the officer's sidearm with both hands but the officer regained control and fired at the 34-year-old man.
The suspect died of his wounds at an area hospital and the officer suffered minor injuries to his hands and knees, Holmes said.
A woman involved in the initial fight at 7100 W. Merrell St. told police the man was believed to have belonged to a California gang and that he had kidnapped and assaulted her over a period of several weeks.
The woman's family intervened Sunday when the suspect returned and allegedly assaulted the woman again, Holmes said. The woman's brothers chased the suspect from the scene and were still in pursuit when police saw the suspect cross Thomas Road.
Holmes said the extent of the 35-year-old woman's injuries were unknown.
The 27-year-old officer has 4.5 years of experience, Holmes said.
The suspect's name was being withheld pending identification and notification of kin, Holmes said.
