Gov. Dannel P. Malloy announced during a press conference Sunday that he will be extending the deadline to register to vote until Thursday at 8 p.m.
Malloy told the media that he signed an executive order extending in-person registration. The original deadline was Tuesday.
"Considering the emergency situation our state is facing, it is neither practical nor wise at this time for people to travel to their town halls so they can meet the deadline to hand in their voter registration applications in person, as the law requires," Malloy said in a statement Sunday.
On Saturday, Malloy declared a state of emergency ahead of Hurricane Sandy by doing some it gives him the ability to modify or suspend and state statute, regulation or requirement such as voter registration.
"Safety is our top priority, and the best thing to do to ensure that nobody is disenfranchised because of the storm is to extend the deadline until after the hurricane has passed," he said in a statement.
Malloy signed a similar order during the Snowstorm Alfred.
"With so many government and school closures, it is really best if voters stay home and stay safe over the next couple of days as this major storm impacts Connecticut," said Secretary of the State Denise Merrill, Connecticut's chief elections official, in a statement Sunday. "We still want to give eligible voters and those who haven't yet found time to register to vote a chance to make their voices heard in the Nov. 6 presidential election, and many will find it hard to get to their town hall in the next two days due to the weather and complications from the storm.
If there are problems with power in Connecticut on Election Day, the governor said he will address it then.
"If there is no power on Election Day, we will cross that bridge when we come to it," Malloy said during a press conference Sunday night.
