MESA, AZ (CBS5/AP) -

Four students at Mesa High School were taken to a hospital Wednesday after allegedly smoking an unknown substance.

Mesa police and fire were called to the school nurse's office about 2 p.m.

They said seven juveniles between the ages of 14 and 18 were experiencing rapid heartbeats, signs of high blood pressure and running mild temperatures.

Police said all of the students denied smoking anything illegal, but one of the teens claimed he was smoking spice.

Four of the seven students were taken to the hospital for elevated blood pressure, according to Mesa Fire Department spokesman Forrest Smith. They are reported to be in stable condition.

Smith said none of the teens were in possession of any illegal substances when authorities arrived.
