PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Police have arrested a 27-year-old man who they believe killed a Phoenix woman by injecting her with a deadly dose of heroin.

Phoenix police said they found 28-year-old Natasha Gates on Wednesday morning at a home on West Osborn.

Police said she was partially clothed outside of a bathtub filled with water.

A friend of the victim, whose name is being withheld as part of the investigation, told police that he got a text message from Gates saying she wanted to "get high," according to the police report.

The friend said he texted her back, telling her he didn't want her "getting shot up" by his roommate, John Franklin.

The friend said he later found Gates and Franklin high from heroin on Tuesday night.

Franklin said when his roommate came home he put Gates in the cold water and kept her head above water, the police report said.

The friend told police she remained in that condition for four to five hours and he went to bed and left the victim in the care of Franklin.

Soon after, Franklin reportedly fell asleep and awoke to find Gates still unconscious in the bathtub.

Police said it wasn't until the next morning that authorities were notified.

The friend texted his mother, saying his life was over. When his mother arrived at his home, her son said Gates was dead in the bathroom. His mother, who is a registered nurse, went to the bathroom to see if she could help but Gates was dead. The mother then called 911.

She told police her son had a long history of heroin abuse and that she was told Franklin was growing and selling hallucinogenic mushrooms in his home.

Franklin was arrested on charges of negligent homicide and drug possession.

The investigating is ongoing.
