PHOENIX (CBS5) -
A police standoff led to the arrest of a Phoenix man suspected of weapons violations and possessing illegal drugs.
The suspect, whose name has not yet been released, was taken into custody Tuesday after a police tactical unit surrounded a duplex in the 5900 block of North 27th Avenue.
Phoenix police spokesman Sgt. Trent Crump said the suspect was recklessly handling a gun last week in one of the duplexes.
"The gun discharged while he was literally, according to witnesses, spinning on his finger," Crump said.
The bullet hit a woman in the duplex with the suspect. She was treated for the gunshot wound and is OK.
The suspect fled with the gun. Police located him a few hours later.
"One of our officers got in a foot pursuit with him," Crump said. "He dropped a backpack."
Crump said the backpack didn't contain the weapon but officers did find a substantial quantity of illegal drugs.
Tuesday morning, 911 dispatchers got a call that the man had returned to the duplex.
"When we arrived, some of the occupants came out but the subject refused to," Crump said.
Crump said the man eventually surrendered peacefully. Charges are pending.
