Phoenix man sentenced in 'Fast and Furious' case

Posted: Updated:

A defendant in the government's botched "Fast and Furious" operation has been sentenced to prison for helping supply assault weapons to Mexican drug gangs.

The Los Angeles Times says Danny Morones was sentenced in San Diego Monday to four years and seven months in prison. He pleaded guilty to federal charges.

The 24-year-old Phoenix man was accused of acting as an illegal "straw buyer" to obtain 27 AK-47s in Arizona that were destined for drug gangs.

In Operation Fast and Furious, federal agents allowed Morones and others to purchase guns so authorities could track the weapons to higher-ups. But they lost track of many weapons. Some were later found at crime scenes, including the 2010 killing of a U.S. Border Patrol agent.
