Debra Glavin says her neighbor, Jonesboro City Councilman Joe Compton, was driving drunk on Wednesday.
"He was headed for the tree over there and I thought he was going to kill himself," Glavin said. "I saw him come around the curve and I thought, 'He is headed to the mailbox.' Sure enough, he went over the curve and hit the box."
Glavin said that after he hit her mailbox, Compton backed up and drove his pickup home, located several houses away.
Glavin told CBS Atlanta News that she then sent her husband to Compton's home to straighten things out.
"And he told him that he needed to sign the paper and say, 'You hit it and you are responsible for it.' He said, 'I'll take care of it tomorrow,' and so my husband came back and said, 'Call the cops,' and that is what we did," Glavin said.
Compton eventually walked to her house and promised to take care of the damage, according to Glavin. She said it was clear he had been drinking.
"He reeked and he was unsteady and falling over," Glavin said.
Compton was later arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, failure to maintain a lane and leaving the scene of an accident.
In court Thursday afternoon, a judge said blood alcohol tests showed Compton was way over the legal limit of .08.
"Your blood alcohol level is .239 grams," Clayton County Magistrate Judge Daphne Walker said.
Bond was set at $9,500.
"He is certainly remorseful and apologetic because he has a constituency that is going to see all this and it hurts him," said James Studdard, Compton's attorney. "Like I said, he is remorseful."
"I do feel bad for him, but hey, don't do it and you won't have to worry about it," Glavin said.
