FLAGSTAFF, AZ (CBS5/AP) -

Flagstaff police are looking for whoever hanged a 4-month-old puppy from its own doghouse while the owner was away.

Police spokesman Sgt. James Jackson said the woman returned home after a visit to Sedona on Sunday and found the puppy hanging from a noose in a makeshift dog house shed. She cut the animal down so her children wouldn't see it and called police.

The woman told officers police had been at her home about two weeks earlier after someone complained about her dogs barking. An officer could not find any record of a prior incident, Jackson said.

Jackson said whoever killed the dog is only guilty of a misdemeanor but police are still doing everything they can to solve the case.

Anyone with information is asked to call Silent Witness at 928-774-6111.
