A 1-year-old Surprise toddler is safe after a neighbor found her wandering alone in her neighborhood, police said.
Her mother had walked outside of the house to check the mail and did not know that her daughter had followed her out, Surprise police spokesman John Bacon said.
The toddler's father, who was inside the house, was unaware that his daughter had walked out, Bacon said.
Mom picked up the mail and walked back into the house, still not noticing that her daughter had followed her out, Bacon said.
The girl began to roam the neighborhood for 20 to 30 minutes, according to Bacon. By now, her parents, who are both deaf, had noticed she was missing and were trying to contact police through an interpreter.
Meanwhile, a neighbor found the girl and notified authorities. The toddler had a few minor abrasions on her bare feet from walking but was not transported.
One of the responding firefighters knew sign language and was able to interpret between the parents and first responders.
The girl was reunited with her parents and everyone went home.
