Ancient pottery found in Patagonia Mountains
TUCSON, AZ (CBS5) -
Sonoita Border Patrol agents discovered several artifacts while they were patrolling in the rugged Patagonia Mountains last week.
The agents found an intact ancient pot and a piece of another pot south of Patagonia. Both items were made of clay and appeared weathered, Customs and Border Protection officials said.
Following the discovery, agents notified U.S. Forest Service officials who then took charge of the artifacts for further study.
The Forest Service said it believes the pot is a genuine artifact that could date back 1,000 years.
While the primary mission of Border Patrol agents is the safety of the borders, they also receive training on environmental and cultural stewardship.
