Candidates in 1st District square off at forum

Posted: Updated:
CASA GRANDE, AZ (AP) -

The candidates running for Arizona's 1st Congressional District squared off at a candidate forum in Casa Grande on Thursday night.

Republican Jonathan Paton attacked his main opponent, Democrat Ann Kirkpatrick, for supporting the federal Affordable Care Act.

Kirkpatrick, meanwhile, knocked Paton for having lived most of his life outside the newly-redrawn district, which extends from the northern outskirts of Tucson on the south to the Arizona-Utah line on the north.

Kirkpatrick held the congressional seat for one term before being defeated in 2010 by current Rep. Paul Gosar, who is seeking re-election in a neighboring district.

Paton is a former state legislator who ran unsuccessfully for Congress in 2010.

The Casa Grande Dispatch reports about 300 people attended the event, which also featured Libertarian candidate Kim Allen.
