Mesa resident receives Citizen of Bravery Award

Posted: Updated:

A Mesa resident was presented the Citizen Bravery Award Monday, Oct. 1 during the Mesa City Council meeting.

Caitlin McGrath received the award for her courage and bravery during a potential carjacking.

McGrath is a nanny for Chris and Heidi Powell who are trainers on the television show Extreme Makeover Weight Loss Edition. McGrath and the Powell's 1-year-old son, Cash, were sitting in the backseat of their car when a suspect approached the vehicle. The suspect allegedly entered the car when McGrath grabbed Cash and fled from the vehicle.

After fleeing from the vehicle, McGrath was able to call 911. Officers told McGrath that she most likely prevented a kidnapping situation.

Both McGrath and Cash were unharmed in the incident.

Mesa police were later able to arrest the suspect.

The Powell family was present when McGrath received the award from Mesa Mayor Scott Smith and District 2 Councilmember Alex Finter.

McGrath is a student at Mesa Community College where she plans to attend nursing school.
