A 20-year-old man is in police custody on suspicion of pulling off two armed robberies about 15 minutes apart in Phoenix early Sunday morning.

Justin Risner was arrested as he walked out of a residential area near 35th Avenue and Cactus Road, officers said.

About 4:15 a.m., police said Risner, carrying a black handgun, entered a Circle K store at 20202 N. Seventh Ave., approached the clerk and demanded money from the cash register. The suspect fled the scene.

About 17 minutes later, officers said Risner held up an AM-PM mini-mart at 3501 W. Peoria Ave. Risner fled the store with an undetermined amount of money from the cash register. Officers saw the suspect's vehicle in a cul-de-sac just west of 35th Avenue and Cactus Road.

Neighbors in that same area said the man was asleep in their backyard.

"Maybe we were lucky, maybe we weren't. I don't know if he had the gun on him," said neighbor David Briggs.

Briggs said his neighbor spotted the suspect asleep in his backyard down the street from the AM-PM at approximately 6 a.m.

"He got sleepy thinking he could hide back there and then he would be done with it," said Briggs.

Briggs said his neighbor woke the suspect up then he was back on the run.

"He jumped over this fence on that side where the gate is. I didn't even have time to say 'hey, what the h--- are you doing?'"

Police said Risner was captured a short time later in the same area.

Police said they found a weapon, mask and cash in the suspect's vehicle.
