PHOENIX (AP) -
Several hundred activists and union officials have spread out across Latino neighborhoods in metropolitan Phoenix to register voters in an effort to prevent the re-election of Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio.
The group included about 50 young people and union leaders who took a bus from Los Angeles to participate in an "Adios Arpaio" rally in Phoenix on Saturday. Organizer Daria Ovide says the weekend-long effort to register voters is part of an effort to register tens of thousands of voters before the November election.
The group objects to Arpaio's strong anti-illegal immigrant positions and his support for the state's tough new law targeting illegal immigrants, SB1070.
