The scene of the carjacking, near 43rd Avenue and Roosevelt Street
75th Avenue and McDowell
PHOENIX (CBS5) -
It was a wild ride for a man who led police on a dangerous, 90-minute long chase, with a shocking ending.
The suspect was riding in a stolen car and even shot at a couple of police officers along the way.
Just before 11 a.m. Phoenix police were called out to 72nd Avenue and McDowell, where the suspect reportedly hit the back of a car pulling out of a driveway.
"This individual walked near that vehicle and according to that victim, struck the back window," said Sgt. Tommy Thompson.
Police say the suspect continued walking towards 75th Avenue to a Denny's restaurant. That's where, they say, the suspect carjacked a red Dodge from a couple of people.
"Our officers began to respond to look for the vehicle. A short time later they located the vehicle in the area of 75th Avenue and Virginia," said Thompson.
Officials say they switched to an undercover mode and began to follow him. The suspect then drove to 43rd Avenue and Roosevelt where two officers who weren't involved in the pursuit were parked. Police say the suspect drove toward them and fired his gun.
"One of the vehicles was struck; fortunately none of the officers were injured," said Thompson.
The driver then got onto Interstate 10, heading west with police in pursuit. Police say he stopped about 70 miles from the California border and got out of the stolen car. He then shot himself and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police are still investigating the suspect's motive and have not released his identity at this time.
